Rain stops play - but should it stop window cleaning?
This is a commonly held belief that you should not clean windows when it rains. This is because people think ‘the rain will just make them dirty again'. Is this really a fact?
The simple answer is 'no'. We agree; in parts of Europe and the UK many people avoid having their windows washed when it rains. However it is normal practice in America for window cleaners to work in all weather except storms and high winds. So is there a good reason for the differences in practice?
Windows need cleaning because they are dirty; not because they get wet. When chimneys were belching out smoke it probably made sense. This is because the rain drops would pick up dirt and smoke particles from the air. However since the Clean Air Act came in, that situation has changed. Nowadays the three major causes of dirty windows are dust, pollen and droppings. If these are present on the window glass when it rains, the residue in the rain attaches itself to the dirt and can often make the windows look worse. When the windows is clean the rain will simply runs off and the glass continues to remain clean.
Reliable window cleaners are there for you all your round
When the fine weather comes you can see all sorts of so called 'window cleaners' 'popping out of the woodwork'. These are the amateurs and cowboys. Beware of them, they often do a poor job and take risks. They are part of the reason why the myth about cleaning windows in the rain has sprung up because these fair weather cleaners just don’t want to get wet.
So rain does not stop window cleaning and so it should not stop you. You can have your windows washed with pure water in all but the most torrential rain with excellent results. Indeed for some jobs we actually prefer it to have rained. a bit.
Not having your windows washed in wet weather, especially during the winter months makes the world a duller place. Dirty windows look bad and stop the limited amount of sunlight getting into your home. No wonder people often feel depressed in the winter having look out of their grubby windows.
